In 1979 it was the first Cantabrian municipality to claim autonomy for the region.

The municipality of Cabezón de la Sal has a strategic geographical location, which has defined its historical role over the last centuries. Being next to the main regional communication routes and geologically on a saline diapir, whose deposit was exploited for centuries, have made it the head of the Saja Nansa region, bringing together an important commercial offer and having in the service sector, in addition to textile industry, its main economic resource.
The municipality is made up, in addition to the town itself, by the towns of Bustablado, Duña, Cabrojo, Carrejo, Casar de Periedo, Ontoria, Periedo, Santibáñez, Vernejo and Virgen de la Peña.
